Gulf Shores is a coastal seaside resort in the southwest corner of Alabama. Gulf Shores like all cities has distinct areas with distinct characteristics. The southernmost Gulf front area of the city is devoted to beachfront hotels, condominiums, vacation houses and a tourism/real estate based economy. the central part of the city on the island is home to many ancillary businesses as well as the bulk the single family housing that makes up Gulf Shores. In the past few years the northernmost area of the City (north of the Intracoastal Canal) has blossomed into a metropolis with the addition of the Colonial Pinnacle Craft Farms Shopping Center, New Publix Grocery and many new restaurants and shops. Gulf Shores sister city Orange Beach offers th closest direct access to the Gulf of Mexico for vessels, via Perdido Pass. This area is home to a large charter fishing fleet. The local airport for Gulf Shores is Jack Edwards Airport, which is located on the north side of the Intracoastal Canal.
Pleasure Island is made up of Ft. Morgan, the City of Gulf Shores and the City of Orange Beach and they are contiguous from west to east. The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is the man-made canal built in the 30's that actually creates Pleasure Island. The canal starts at Mobile Bay to the west, and cuts through Oyster Bay into Gulf Shores and continues to the east, into Orange Beach and into Wolf Bay. From there the ICW continues east through Perdido Key and through the Pensacola Bay area.
Pleasure Island's beaches from Ft. Morgan to Perdido Pass totals approximately 30 miles of beautiful white sandy beaches. Perdido Pass bridge connects Orange Beach to Perdido Key, Alabama which continues to the Florida state line for the next 2 miles to make Alabama's Beaches a total of 32 Miles. The bright, "sugar white" quartz sand is some of the most beautiful in the world.
